A Blissful Soak and Ritual at Iceland's Sky Lagoon

Iceland is known for its breathtaking landscapes and geothermal wonders, and one experience that shouldn't be missed is the Sky Lagoon. Recently, my husband Ben and I had the pleasure of immersing ourselves in this serene escape, opting for the Pure Package, complete with the 7-step ritual, a complimentary drink, and a tantalizing Sky Platter.

Due to the closing of the Blue Lagoon while we were there, the Sky Lagoon was operating under reservation only while we were there. It was booked and they had no room for walk-ins (I know this because the people in from of us tried to book in person). Typically, they said they have openings same day, but if you are planning on making a stop here, make sure to check online if they can accomodate you before making the trek over.

Before indulging in the warmth of the lagoon, we were instructed to take a mandatory pre-soak shower without your bathing suit. For the more reserved, the Sky experience offers a private dressing room for added comfort. When booking, I chose the Pure because it was cheaper and I didn't know that we would have to strip all the way down before the lagoon. Thankfully I don't mind, but I did want to make sure if you are planning an upcoming trip, you know what you are signing up for.

Entering the lagoon around 11:30, we found a blissful serenity in the geothermal spring, the perfect prelude to our ritual. We explored the lagoon and it's nooks and crannies. There were lots of rock formations for you to sit and relax (or slam your toe/knee into like Ben and I did many times). We ventured over to the bar to redeem our complimentary drinks – a crisp cider for Ben and a delightful rose for me and made our way over to the infinity edge.

The 7-step ritual techincally begins when you enter the lagoon, but to move onto step 2, you have to have a wristband on indicating you paid for the full ritual. Stepping out of the nice, warm lagoon, you start with a courageous plunge into icy water, though I admittedly wimped out, opting for a very quick dunk and scurrying out. The sauna, our third step, offered a spectacular view, while a refreshing cool mist prepared us for the luxurious body scrub. The steam room, a subsequent step, opened our pores, enhancing the effects of the scrub. A cooling shower post-steam left our skin feeling remarkably soft as we re-entered the lagoon for further relaxation.

Something I was happy about that sets the Sky Lagoon apart from the Blue Lagoon is the freedom to immerse your hair without fearing harsh aftereffects, making it a heated pool paradise overlooking the water. After our invigorating soak, another round of showers led us to the on-site restaurant.

Our package came with the Sky Platter, we delighted in an array of flavors. While the Happy Marriage pastry stole my heart, we hesitated to sample the reindeer, pork, and wild game pate, eventually indulging in the smoked fish – a taste we found to be an acquired taste. The cheeses, complemented by fresh blueberry jam, proved to be a delectable combination on the accompanying bread.

Though a pang of regret for missing the Blue Lagoon still lingers, its closure led us to discover the enchanting Sky Lagoon, a truly remarkable experience. The 7-step ritual, soothing waters, and culinary delights make the Sky Lagoon a destination worthy of acclaim. Here's to singing its praises for years to come, and to the unexpected wonders that travel often unveils.
